How to Measure Windows for Custom Shades

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a well-fitting custom shade. Take your time, measure each window separately, and record every dimension in width × height order. Even windows that look identical can differ slightly.

Before you measure

  • Use a steel tape measure rather than a cloth tape.
  • Record dimensions in inches and keep the same precision throughout.
  • Measure the window opening itself, not an existing blind.
  • Check for handles, trim, locks, cranks, or other obstructions.

Choose inside mount or outside mount

An inside mount sits within the window opening for a clean, built-in appearance. It requires enough unobstructed depth for the headrail. An outside mount attaches above or around the opening and can provide broader coverage when the opening is shallow or not square.

How to measure for an inside mount

  1. Measure the inside width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening.
  2. Record the narrowest width. Do not make your own manufacturing deduction unless the product instructions specifically request it.
  3. Measure the height at the left, center, and right.
  4. Record the longest height.
  5. Measure the unobstructed depth at the shallowest point and compare it with the product’s minimum-depth requirement.

How to measure for an outside mount

  1. Decide exactly where the headrail and brackets will be installed.
  2. Measure the total width you want the shade to cover, including the desired overlap beyond the opening.
  3. Measure from the planned top mounting point to the desired bottom edge.
  4. Confirm that trim, handles, and furniture will not interfere with operation.

Final measurement checklist

  • Label every window by room and position.
  • Confirm width and height have not been reversed.
  • Re-measure before ordering.
  • Use the product page’s mount and depth notes for the exact shade model.
